Reviews and pictures from Sietse's record collection
You wouldn’t directly call this an album as a 10” release with only two songs. But the two Dutch guys behind Dead Neanderthals clearly think different about it, and why not. As a grindcore duo you are free to call something an album if it reaches over 10 minutes of length in my opinion, which Jazzhammer / Stormannsgalskap does. Actually both tracks are just under 10 minutes each.
Some might think now “Grindcore with tracks of 10 minutes, and that by a duo…you have got to be kidding me”, but for real “I kid you not”!
Dead Neanderthals is the duo of O on baritone saxophone and R on caveman drumming, as they seem to be credited, if at all, on their releases. So we have drums and saxophone, and a shit load of effects for that saxophone.
What we are presented can be considered as a combination of some really crazy jazz and indeed grindcore drums. While the drums are beating like a machine we hear the saxophone screaming, skreeking and beeping loud and long tones which are almost drone like. These sounds are filled with even more free played saxophone giving it this extra touch.
On the first track Jazzhammer the music is very in your face straight forward with fast beats while the second track Stormannsgalskap uses more a pulsating blasts, which wants to make bang your head while making some fist pumps throughout the whole (almost) 10 minutes.
Both pieces are really repetitive which amplifies the strength of the music, which is really direct intense in your face.
The 10” is limited, but still available and a new album is already in the make again so go check it out. And be sure to go see them live when they are in the neighborhood.
